February 2021

Dear Family and Friends of the BSO,

As we all continue to weather the global COVID-19 pandemic, we at the BSO, Inc. look back at an unusual and unprecedented year with this 2019–20 Annual Report, while we look ahead to a vibrant future.

The BSO’s story of 2019–20 is one of resilience and adaptation in the face of adversity, bolstered by the dedication of all members of the BSO family—musicians, donors, subscribers, concertgoers, broadcast audiences, volunteers, and staff. When the pandemic forced us to close our doors to live audiences, your support created new ways to share music with all, ensuring the continuation of our mission and fulfilling our responsibility to our audiences and communities. Meanwhile, as our society reckoned with racial injustice and inequity, we turned our attention inward to recognize our role in past wrongs and to forge a path toward righting them, a process that continues in earnest.

In this Annual Report, you will find many stories of how the BSO, Boston Pops, and Tanglewood persisted through the challenges of this difficult year and how your support of our musicmaking made this possible. Your unwavering dedication and generosity sustain the BSO and all that we do, and we thank you sincerely for your ongoing support.

As both of us near the end of our respective tenures with the BSO, the organization’s challenges continue, but so too does the BSO’s resolve to emerge with strength, assured of the importance of music in our culture and the BSO's vital role as a global leader in the art form.

With deep gratitude,
